Nylon 6
Nylon 6 sheet is a versatile engineering plastic with a good balance of mechanical strength, stiffness, toughness and wear resistance, making it an excellent choice for various applications. It is also knows for its good electrical insulation properties and chemical resistance, especially to oils and fuels. Nylon 6 is available in both cast and extruded forms with extruded typically offering more accurate thickness. Cast nylon 6 can have more internal stress but may be easier to machine.
Key properties and applications
- Mechanical properties – nylon 6 offers high strength, stiffness and hardness, along with good creep and wear resistance.
- Electrical properties – nylon 6 is an excellent electrical insulator
- Chemical resistance – resistant to many oils, chemicals, fuels and cleaning fluids.
- Operates in a wide temperature range, typically from -40°C to to +70°C for extruded nylon 6 and up to +150°C for cast nylon 6.
- Nylon 6 can be used in various mechanical and electrical applications, including gears, bearings, rollers and insulators. It is also suitable for parts requiring good wear resistance and dimensional stability. Cast nylon 6 is generally easier to machine than extruded nylon 6.
