Acetal

Acetal, also known as polyoxymethylene (POM) is a strong, rigid and durable engineering plastic with a low coefficient of friction, excellent wear and abrasion resistance, and good stability. It also exhibits low moisture absorption and is known for its chemical resistance and ease of machinability.

Key properties of acetal

  • High strength and stiffness
  • Low friction and wear resistance
  • Dimensional stability in varying temperatures
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Chemical resistance including solvents and fuels
  • Machinability
  • Fatigue resistance
  • Good electrical insulation properties
  • Impact resistance, even at low temperatures

Common applications

  • Mechanical components including gear bearings, bushings, rollers and other parts requiring strength, low frictions and dimensional stability.
  • Electrical components including insulators, housings and connectors, where electrical and dimensional stability are important.
  • Automotive parts including fuel system components, dashboard components and other parts requiring durability and chemical resistance.
  • Food and beverage industry including food handling equipment, conveyor components, and other parts where FDA compliance is required.
  • Medical devices including surgical instruments, housings and other components where biocompatibility and dimensional stability are essential.
